Deciding what to wear for winter weather is always the hardest, am I right? How do I stay cute and stylish under the layers of oversized scarves, chunky sweaters, and puffer coats?
I turned to my good friend, Instagram, to check out how some of my favorite sustainable influencers are dressing for cold weather. As always, I came away with more than enough outfit ideas to help me get through this season.
And I’m sure you’re also going to find at least a couple of looks worth copying to stay warm, cozy, and stylish during winter.
1. Vintage Sweater
Add a vintage sweater to the mix! I love the uniqueness of vintage clothes. They aren’t the style that’s sold in every other store and you probably won’t come across other people on the street wearing the same thing as you. But you also won’t feel out of place wearing a vintage sweater or jumper. The vintage-inspired après ski fashion is still trending this year.
2. Sweater Around The Shoulder
This trend that for some odd reason reminds me of old-school tennis players got extremely popular on social media. And it’s the only way I want to wear my knitted sweaters at the moment. It makes you look so posh without putting in too much effort. But, at the same time, it also feels super cozy to have something warm around your neck and shoulders.
3. Drape Don’t Wear
The next styling trick I picked up from Essy (@esosavstheworld). Gently draping your coat or blazer over your shoulder instead of putting it on is something you only see celebrities doing. Girl, I’m telling you, we’re all special enough to wear our coats whatever way we want to!
4. Wearing Colors
Yes, winter is gloomy and sad, but that doesn’t mean your outfit has to be gloomy too. Don’t be afraid to wear your favorite colors, go all-in on them! Especially when those winter blues hit! Colors have a positive effect on your mind, so surround yourself with them all the time!
5. Statement Boots
I’m a huge believer in footwear being the focal point of your outfit. If you love your shoes and boots as much as I do mine, try a very simple, minimalist outfit next time, and pair it with your boldest, most eye-catching pair of boots!
6. Color-Coordinated Accessories
If you don’t have statement boots and accessories, and you pretty much prefer a minimalist style, you can still let your boots and bag have their spotlight moment. Choose a prominent color-coordinated bag and boots combo and keep the rest of your outfit minimal!
7. Skirts
This is the first winter I’m starting to really appreciate midi- and maxi skirts. Maybe it’s an age thing, maybe it’s because they are trending, I don’t know and I don’t care: I love wearing them, and I love seeing other women rocking them. Especially with white sneakers!
If you’re also into this trend, check out my favorite sustainable midi skirts!
8. Flare Pants
It seems like flare pants are going to stay in style for at least a few more years. If you like them, it’s not too late to invest in a nice quality pair. Or even better, find one second-hand!
9. Sweater As A Scarf
This old-new sweater trend (see 2. image) is so versatile, you can wear it with anything. I especially like the idea of throwing on your extra sweater as a scarf for some effortlessly cool coziness.
10. Stay Cozy
Stay cozy in your oversized sweaters and comfy pants and eat as much comfort food as you need to! This is the season for that! If you want to, add cute accessories and you’ll instantly look more put together like Martina (@martina_lubian) did here with her pink shoulder bag.
11. Puffers
Yes, puffer coats are still trending this winter and I just love how warm and comfy they are. Wearing a puffer jacket this winter guarantees you being the coolest kid on the block, but they also work when you’re fed up with everything and you just want a thick layer of clothing separating you from the outside world.
12. Save The Duck
But you know what’s out of style in 2021? Animal cruelty! Many puffer coats are insulated with feathers and down which always involve animal cruelty. There are many brands making puffer coats with recycled plastic bottles, so why choose the unethical one? Michelle (@harmfreefashion) is wearing a Save The Duck jacket, but you can also find them at Girlfriend Collective, or even second-hand.
13. Light Monochrome
I’m seeing more and more women styling fully white or off-white outfits for winter. Are they highly impractical for this muddy weather? Absolutely! But who cares when they look so stylish?
Also, as I mentioned above, I believe colors can have a positive or negative impact on our minds, and lighter colors always make me lighter and happier.
